Fixed Retainers
What Is a Fixed Retainer?
A fixed retainer is a thin wire bonded to the back of selected teeth, usually the front teeth, to help maintain alignment after treatment. It works continuously but needs careful cleaning and periodic checks for loose bonds or wire damage. A removable retainer may also be recommended for additional retention.
What Is It Used For?
Fixed retainers help maintain the positions of selected teeth after treatment. They may be particularly useful where teeth are more likely to rotate again or spaces may reopen.
How Does It Work?
The bonded wire connects selected teeth and helps resist unwanted movement. It stays in place continuously, although it does not necessarily retain every tooth in the arch.
What Can Patients Expect?
The wire may initially feel noticeable to the tongue. A bond can loosen without obvious discomfort, so regular checks remain important. Additional removable retention may be prescribed.
Care & Instructions
Brush around the wire and clean between the teeth with the recommended flossing aids. Avoid biting hard objects. Contact the clinic if the wire detaches, bends, feels sharp, or a tooth appears to move.
