Functional Appliances

What Are Functional Appliances?
Functional appliances are fixed or removable devices that change how the upper and lower teeth and jaws meet during growth. They are commonly used in selected growing patients with an increased overjet. Their effects include changes in tooth position and, in suitable cases, a contribution to jaw relationship correction.

What Is It Used For?
These appliances help address selected bite discrepancies during growth, particularly when the upper front teeth sit too far ahead of the lower teeth. Treatment suitability depends on the jaw relationship and stage of development.

How Does It Work?
The appliance guides the lower jaw into a different position when the mouth closes. Forces from the appliance and surrounding muscles influence tooth positions and may contribute to changes in the jaw relationship during growth.

What Can Patients Expect?
Extra saliva, altered speech, and mild tooth or muscle tenderness may occur during adjustment. Removable designs require consistent wear, while fixed designs remain attached. Braces or aligners may be needed to complete tooth alignment.

Care & Instructions
Follow the prescribed wear schedule and appliance-specific cleaning instructions. Keep removable appliances in a protective case when not in use. Report breakage, poor fit, or persistent discomfort rather than adjusting the appliance yourself.
