What Is Orthodontic Headgear?
Orthodontic headgear is an appliance worn partly outside the mouth to apply forces to the upper teeth and jaw. In selected growing patients, it may help manage upper jaw growth or move and stabilise upper back teeth. It must be fitted and worn according to specific instructions, including the prescribed safety precautions.
What Is It Used For?
Headgear may help manage selected bite discrepancies by influencing upper jaw growth or controlling the position of upper back teeth. Its purpose depends on the patient’s growth pattern and treatment plan.
How Does It Work?
An external strap connects to an orthodontic attachment and delivers force in a prescribed direction. The appliance design and wear schedule determine how that force supports treatment.
What Can Patients Expect?
The appliance may feel unfamiliar, and mild tooth tenderness can occur during adjustment. Consistent wear is important, with regular appointments used to check the fit and treatment response.
Care & Instructions
Put on and remove headgear exactly as demonstrated, using all prescribed safety features. Never wear it during sports or rough play, and never allow anyone to pull on it. Stop using it and contact the clinic if it is damaged or does not fit securely.
