Space Maintainers
What Are Space Maintainers?
Space maintainers are appliances that help preserve room for a permanent tooth after a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected. They reduce the chance of neighbouring teeth drifting into that space. Not every early tooth loss requires an appliance; the decision depends on the tooth involved, available space, and eruption timing.
What Is It Used For?
A space maintainer helps protect the space needed by a developing permanent tooth. It may reduce space loss while waiting for that tooth to erupt.
How Does It Work?
A fixed or removable appliance holds the existing space between teeth. Its fit and the developing permanent tooth are monitored so the appliance can be adjusted or removed at the appropriate time.
What Can Patients Expect?
The appliance may feel unfamiliar at first but generally becomes easier to tolerate. Regular checks are needed because the mouth continues to grow and permanent teeth continue to erupt.
Care & Instructions
Brush carefully around its bands and wires. Avoid hard or sticky foods with fixed designs and do not pull on the appliance. Report looseness or breakage and attend scheduled eruption checks.
