When Teeth Are Tender

Choose foods that require less chewing, such as eggs, yogurt, soft rice, pasta, and cooked vegetables. Return to a varied diet as comfort allows.

Protecting the Appliance

  • Avoid chewing ice, hard sweets, unpopped popcorn kernels, and very sticky foods.

  • Cut firm foods such as apples, raw vegetables, and crusty bread into manageable pieces instead of biting directly with the front teeth.

  • Do not chew pens, fingernails, or other objects.

  • If food catches, clean it gently rather than using sharp objects.

Protecting the Teeth

Limit frequent sugary snacks, sweet drinks, and acidic drinks. Choose water as the everyday drink. Rinse with water after meals when brushing is unavailable, then clean properly when practical.

Other Appliances

  • For removable aligners or appliances, follow their specific eating and removal instructions.

  • For sport, use a suitable orthodontic mouthguard as advised by your dental team.
