Loose or Broken Brackets & Appliances

A bracket may detach from the tooth but remain on the wire. A band around a back tooth or another fixed appliance may also become loose. These problems need advice because the appliance may no longer work as planned.

Loose Bracket

  • If it remains on the wire, leave it attached and avoid manipulating it.

  • Cover an accessible rubbing surface with wax.

  • Avoid hard and sticky food and contact the clinic.

  • Do not glue it back, remove the main wire, or attempt repairs.

Loose Band or Fixed Appliance

  • Do not rock or pull on it.

  • If an expander or another activated appliance becomes loose, contact the clinic before further activation.

  • Wax may cushion a rubbing area but cannot stabilize a dangerously loose appliance.

Detached Component

If it has completely detached and is safely out of the mouth, store it in a small container and bring it to your appointment.

Removable Appliances

Do not force a bent, damaged, or poorly fitting removable appliance into place. Ask the clinic what to do.

When to Seek Urgent Help

An appliance that interferes with swallowing, a dangerously loose component, significant injury, or severe pain requires prompt assessment.

Breathing difficulty or choking is a medical emergency.
