ORTHODONTIC CONCERN
Deep Bite

What Is a Deep Bite?
A deep bite occurs when the upper front teeth cover too much of the lower front teeth when the mouth closes. In some cases, this can contribute to tooth wear or contact with the gums or palate. Treatment aims to create a more balanced overlap while considering tooth position, jaw relationships, and facial proportions.
VIDEO LEARNING
A future video guide to deep bite.
Video description placeholder — a short introduction to the future educational video will appear here.
Why Does It Happen?
A deep bite may result from excessive eruption or positioning of the front teeth, insufficient vertical development of the back teeth, or a combination of these factors. Jaw growth patterns, particularly a shorter vertical facial pattern, may also contribute.
Why Can It Be a Problem?
A significant deep bite can contribute to excessive wear or chipping of the front teeth and, in severe cases, the teeth may contact and irritate the opposing gum tissue. It may also influence how the lower jaw moves during function and can sometimes be associated with jaw muscle or joint symptoms.
When Should It Be Evaluated?
A deep bite should be evaluated when the overlap is pronounced, causes tooth wear or gum contact, affects function, or is progressing during growth. An orthodontic assessment can determine its cause and whether treatment is recommended.
